Santa train rides range from a one-hour journey with onboard entertainment to a half-day experience with steam travel, a Christmas show and station activities. We compared 10 confirmed 2026 experiences across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, using official prices, dates, journey lengths and ticket inclusions.

Our approximate family cost is for two adults and two children who each need a seat. It uses the lowest advertised ticket or table price available when we checked. Booking fees, parking, food and travel to the railway are excluded unless stated. Prices usually rise nearer Christmas, and age rules for babies and toddlers differ.

Details were checked by FamilySave on 5 October 2026. Availability changes as individual trains sell out, so use the official booking calendar before making other travel plans.

FamilySave Picks

FamilySave Pick: Lowest Starting Family Price

Bluebell Railway Santa Specials, East Sussex

Why we picked it: Two adult tickets from £35 and two child tickets from £10 produce a starting family total of £90. The ticket also includes fairground rides and family attractions at the Christmas fair.

Best for: Families who want a heritage steam journey and activities off the train.

Watch out for: These are starting prices, and your chosen date, time and seating type may cost more. Check the final basket before paying.

Booking: Bluebell Railway

FamilySave Pick: Best for SEND and Communication Support

East Lancashire Railway Santa Specials, Greater Manchester

Why we picked it: The railway offers dedicated SEND Family Santa Specials. A professional British Sign Language interpreter can also be requested on selected dates for SEND and standard trains.

Best for: Families who need a tailored session or BSL support.

Watch out for: The station walkthrough includes some flashing lights. BSL places are limited and need to be arranged by email rather than assumed from a standard booking.

Booking: East Lancashire Railway

FamilySave Pick: Best Full Experience

Severn Valley Railway Santa's Steam Specials, Worcestershire

Why we picked it: The experience lasts at least two and a half hours and combines a heritage train journey with a professional Christmas show at Arley, a present for each child and a sweet treat for every passenger.

Best for: Families who want more than a short ride and are happy with a theatrical Santa experience.

Watch out for: Santa appears in the stage show rather than meeting each family personally. Kidderminster parking costs £4 per day.

Booking: Severn Valley Railway

FamilySave Pick: Best Northern Ireland Option

Lapland Express, Downpatrick and County Down Railway

Why we picked it: This is a clearly priced 90-minute experience with a Santa visit, present, festive refreshments and a specific quiet train with fewer passengers and reduced noise.

Best for: Northern Ireland families, including those who would benefit from a quieter session.

Watch out for: Advance booking is essential and a 6% ticket fee applies. The train is diesel, not steam.

Booking: Downpatrick and County Down Railway

FamilySave Pick: Best Scottish Scenery

Strathspey Railway Santa's Elf Express, Aviemore

Why we picked it: The journey takes about one hour and 45 minutes through the winter Highlands. Santa visits each family table, while elves provide songs, jokes and entertainment.

Best for: Families combining a Christmas train with a Highland break.

Watch out for: Standard tickets are sold by table and live prices depend on the table and carriage chosen. Traditional carriages can feel cold, and the railway may use a heritage diesel locomotive if steam is unavailable.

Booking: Strathspey Railway

Scotland

Strathspey Railway Santa's Elf Express, Aviemore

Location: Aviemore Station, Dalfaber Road, Aviemore PH22 1PY.

Dates: 28 and 29 November, 5, 6, 11 to 13 and 17 to 24 December 2026.

Price: Standard Elf Express tickets are sold as fixed-price tables for up to two or four passengers. Check the live booking page for the table price on your chosen train. Babies under 10 months travel free. Children aged 10 months to two need a £5 toddler ticket if they are to receive the gift and activity book.

Best for: A longer festive journey through Highland scenery.

What you get: An approximately one-hour, 45-minute return trip in a decorated heritage train, onboard elves, a visit from Santa at each family table, and a gift and activity book for children aged 10 months and over.

Things to know: Children aged three and over need a seat. Prams and baby seats cannot be carried. Dogs are not allowed except assistance dogs. Free parking is behind Aviemore Station, and passengers with mobility needs should use the Dalfaber Road entrance because the route from the front of the station includes steps. Steam is planned but not guaranteed.

How to Choose a Santa Train

Decide whether a personal Santa meeting matters

Some trains bring Santa to each table or stop at a grotto. Severn Valley Railway instead places Santa at the centre of a professional stage show. Read the format carefully if your child expects a conversation and photograph.

Compare the full family total

Check whether the railway charges per person, table or compartment. Add booking fees, parking, transport to the station and any toddler ticket before comparing. A larger compartment can work well for two families travelling together, but it may be poor value for a small group.

Book a November or early daytime departure

Several railways charge less in late November or at quieter morning times. The difference can exceed £40 for a family of four compared with a peak date near Christmas Eve.

Check what type of train is promised

Most heritage railways intend to use steam, but operational problems can lead to a diesel replacement. Great Central advertises steam in one direction and heritage diesel on the return, while Downpatrick's Lapland Express is a diesel experience.

Reserve accessibility support directly

Accessible compartments and wheelchair spaces are limited. Do not rely only on a standard online seat booking. Contact the railway if you need a wheelchair space, essential companion ticket, BSL interpreter, quieter service or help reaching the platform.

Consider the total visit length

A one-hour ride may suit younger children better than a half-day event. Include check-in, parking, bus transfers and station activities when planning meals, naps and the journey home.

Santa Train FAQs

How much does a Santa train cost for a family of four?

The starting totals in this comparison range from £90 to £133 for experiences with a published four-person price. Peak dates, first-class seats and private compartments cost more. Strathspey Railway uses live table and carriage pricing, so check the booking page for its current total.

Do babies need Santa train tickets?

Rules vary. Severn Valley allows under-twos to travel free and still receive a present. Downpatrick lets infants up to 12 months travel free only when they do not need a gift or refreshments. Strathspey requires a £5 toddler ticket from 10 months if the child is to receive the gift and activity book.

Is every Santa train steam hauled?

No. Downpatrick uses a diesel train, and Great Central uses steam outward and heritage diesel back. Railways advertising steam usually reserve the right to substitute diesel if a locomotive is unavailable.

Are there quieter Santa train sessions?

Yes. Severn Valley runs relaxed Santa trains on 6, 13 and 20 December. Downpatrick has a quiet train at 4.30pm on 28 November, and East Lancashire operates dedicated SEND Family Santa Specials. Check the exact adaptations before booking because each railway handles lighting, sound and passenger numbers differently.

Does every child receive a present?

Every main experience in this guide includes a gift for a ticketed child, but baby and toddler rules differ. Check whether an infant ticket is needed and whether the present is suitable for the child's age.

Can we take a buggy on a Santa train?

Storage is limited. Severn Valley asks families to leave buggies at home where possible and does not allow them into its show. Strathspey does not carry prams or baby seats, while Downpatrick says prams cannot be wheeled through the carriages. Contact the railway before booking if a buggy is essential.

Can dogs travel on Santa trains?

Most experiences in this guide allow assistance dogs only. This includes Severn Valley, Strathspey and Downpatrick. Always check the specific event rules, even if the railway normally accepts dogs on standard services.
