What “free” means in this guide
We mean no recurring monthly account or card subscription on the stated plan. That does not promise zero charges for every use. Card replacement, delivery, foreign exchange, extra top-ups and cash machines can add costs.
The comparison shows standard pricing. Rooster’s conditional offer is shown separately on its product card. GoHenry is included as a paid reference, not a free option.
Free options still have conditions
Monzo requires the parent or guardian to bank with Monzo. NatWest Adapt requires a NatWest parent at ages 11–15. Nationwide lists an in-branch application with an adult for 11–12s. Revolut Standard is limited to one child account.
For eligible NatWest, RBS or Ulster Bank customers, Rooster’s claimed offer covers up to three cards per household. It ends if the parent’s eligibility ends, and usage fees can still apply.
Check the practical details before deciding
A free card is only useful if it works for the way your child spends. Check cash machine allowances and whether you can switch online payments off. Mobile wallets have age and device rules: Monzo and Rooster confirm support from 13.
Unknown details are marked as needing confirmation rather than treated as a feature the provider lacks. Use the source links to check a detail that matters to your family.
Questions parents ask
Is the free Rooster app a free debit card?
No. The free virtual tracker uses pretend money or stars and has no real-money spending card. The Rooster Card has a subscription unless a qualifying offer is claimed.
Should I choose the cheapest account?
Cost is one factor. Compare age eligibility, ownership, parent controls and whether your family uses paid features. A product with more useful tools may justify a fee.
