GoHenry alternatives: what does your family need?

Monzo is worth comparing if you want parent controls without a subscription and are happy to open a parent account. Rooster may cost less, especially for eligible NatWest Group families. From 11, a child-owned bank account is another route.

FamilySave difference: £95.76 a year — Monzo Under 16s has the lower subscription cost

2 children · 12 monthly payments. A normal paid year; excludes trials, card delivery, top-ups and other usage fees. Each product’s features differ.

What are you trying to replace?

If your child mainly spends pocket money in shops, focus on card cost and spending controls. If they use chores and lessons every week, check whether a cheaper alternative offers the routines they actually use.

Revolut is another parent-linked option to investigate if you already use it, but Standard supports one child account and delivery fees may apply. More children can change the family cost.

Choose the trade-off that fits

Lowest recurring cost with controls: compare Monzo, and Rooster if you qualify for its offer. No requirement to open a particular parent bank account: paid GoHenry or Rooster can fit, while Nationwide is a current-account option from 11.

Financial education: GoHenry’s plan-specific Money Missions give you something concrete to compare against informal money conversations. A child-owned current account can be more appropriate for independence than a parent-owned spending account.

  • Ask your child which features they use before changing.
  • Move or withdraw the old balance using the provider’s instructions.
  • Cancel the old subscription separately; moving money does not cancel it.
  • Check the next renewal date and allow time for the replacement card.

Questions parents ask

Is there a free alternative to GoHenry?

There are accounts with no monthly subscription, including Monzo Under 16s. Eligibility and parent account requirements still apply. Rooster’s free card offer is conditional; its free virtual tracker is not a spending card.
